I try my very best to finish my work in the mornings while the kids are in school so I can be available for them in the afternoons. Here’s my little Nalani putting at the practice green at our local golf course. This is how we spend our afternoons after homework is all done. Some parents wonder if we’re pushing our kids too hard but I don’t think so. I try to get them out everyday to practice, but that doesn’t always happen. That said, if your child were taking piano lessons, wouldn’t you want them to practice everyday? That’s all we do, it’s not like we’re playing 18-holes of golf everyday. We spend about one to two hours at the golf course on the range and putting green.
Finding contract work versus being employed full time gives me this flexibility. If’I'm contracted with a client, it doesn’t really matter what hours I work, as long as I get the work done. On occasion I may have a conference call scheduled in the afternoon just because someone else isn’t available in the morning. But, for the most part, I set my own hours. While some people may prefer to work 8 to 5 and receive a steady income, I personally find it worth my while to charge more on a per hourly basis to work fewer hours.
Understand that employers must pay a portion of an employee’s taxes. So, the $20 per hour in fact costs an employer more because of the taxes that must be paid for that employee. Yes, if you’re self employed, you will be double taxed. But, don’t be surprised that a company may just be willing to pay you $40 per hour, to do the same work, if you can complete it in 10-20 hours per week. Be honest, how many people actually work the entire eight hours straight they are on the clock?
