Managing your Workload & Staying Organized

One of my biggest challenges in managing multiple projects is staying organized.  It’s all in the details right and that’s why people pay us the big bucks!

Personally, I like mind mapping.  I’m a visual person so I like pictures, especially when they’re pretty and organized.  Mind mapping allows me to create a focused topic then branch out from there.  For example, if I have a project, I’ll branch out my goals.  Then, go to each goal, then branch out my tasks to complete those goals.  I can add details such as due date, the name of the person it is assigned to, costs, website, email, notes, etc.  I can even use graphics, such as a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” or a “checkmark.”  It allows me to drill down into each of my projects and know where I’m at.

Now, mind mapping is great if you have the right software.  But, buying software can be expensive and each year, there’s always new versions requiring upgrades.  Additionally, it’s near to impossible to share a mind map to someone else who doesn’t have the software.  You’d have to either print it which doesn’t work if you have a lot of branches or export it but you’ll lose the visual diagram.

When I heard about an online hosted mind mapping application I had to give it a try.  I fell in love!  It’s called Mindmeister.  Starting at as little as $4.99 a month, I’m able to access my mind map from anywhere, there’s even an Android App.  I am also able to give other people viewing rights to maps. It makes it so much easier to share the status of projects with a manager or client.  It’s simple to use and has plenty of functionality.
