Office at the Coffee Shop

This morning I sat at a local coffee shop and got about 2 hours of work done.  I had to drop my daughter off at class which is a 40 minute drive from the house.  So, rather than driving all the way back home, I just went across the street, got a cup of tea and connected the free WiFi to my laptop.

Mr. Starbucks really knew what he was doing.  Though I prefer the much quieter mom and pop shops, it’s good to know that no matter what city I find myself in, I can rely that there’s a Starbucks on any corner for me to squeeze in a little work.  Rather than going to someone’s office or having them come to my home office, I always schedule my meetings at the coffee shop.  This works especially well when I know I’m going to be sitting at one location for the next 4 to 5 hours waiting for my daughter.  I’ve even done this while my daughter played some of her golf tournaments.  There are some tournaments where parents aren’t allowed to spectate, so, rather than sitting about doing nothing, I can squeeze in some productive work.

Now, if you don’t have access to WiFi, there’s an app that will allow you to tether your smartphone to your laptop for internet.  You won’t find it on the app stores because the carriers don’t like you knowing about it.  You pay a low one time cost to download the app and no monthly fees!  The app is called PDANet and you can find it online from junefabrics.  It works with Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and more.  I don’t use it often, but find it one of my best one time buys ever.

Today I was able to get together and go over some website content and receive great advice from another work at home business friend, Oscar with Oscarstech.  I also had a 9am meeting that flaked but was able to keep working through the hour, so I’m definitely glad I didn’t drive to another location for that meeting.  This is where I’ve learned to really get my way, have people come to me, even if my office is at a coffee shop!
